There’s nothing like the peace of the countryside, the quiet and the lack of distraction. It helps you to focus your mind.

Shaxi is a hidden gem of Yunnan, and it has a magic power to make people wanting to go back again, or even choose to live there.

What is Shaxi like?

Things to do

How to get there

Step 1 Get to Jianchuan

  • From Dali -> Jianchuan
  • From Lijiang -> Jianchuan

Step 2 Shaxi

Outside of Jianchuan bus station, you can take a mini van (max. 7 people) to go to Shaxi at a price of 13CNY (if my memory serves me right). The van leaves when it is full. If you wanna to take it after 6:30 or later, maybe you have to wait very long for the van to be full or you have to pay more to the driver so that he/she will agree to take you to Shaxi. The journey takes around 1.5 hrs driving between mountains.

I personally think accommodation is the most important thing in my trips, so that you have a clean, safe and comfy place to stay, a caring hosts to provide you with helpful information, possible a few fellow guests you would enjoying hanging out with. There are a few places I would recommend here:

Old Theatre Inn

This is the best hostel in Shaxi, which build on an old local house with at least one hundred year of history. This is the place I stayed for around 2 weeks.

Great location
